Interview – Maria Tonna
This week we are speaking to Maria Tonna who is a Technician at TONI&GUY Malta.
What is your role within TONI&GUY?
Creative Technical Director
How did you get involved with TONI&GUY?
One of Gordon Mayo’s trainees joined the company I used to work for, and encouraged me to go and learn with Gordon who later became a master franchise for TONI&GUY Malta.
At which salon do you work?
I work for most of the salons in Malta but mainly I’m situated in the new brand essensuals in Gzira.
How long have you been working with TONI&GUY Malta?
All my life except for some years when I had my own salon.
What first attracted you to hairdressing?
Hair was always my admiration and I always believed that I could improve it.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Nowadays it’s very simple because TONI&GUY are continuously inspiring us by the latest looks from the London Fashion catwalks.
Where did you study?
Mostly with TONI&GUY in London, but I have travelled to Milan and Rome to further my studies.
What is your favourite hairstyle?
Short and blonde.
What is your favourite fashion/hairstyle trend at the moment?
Multicolour dip dyes.
What products would you recommend from the label.m range?
Volume Foam and Leave-in Conditioner.
How do you feel that fashion trends in Malta reflect the styles of Italy, the UK and Europe? What are the similarities and the differences?
Malta’s styles follow mostly the viewer’s ideas from magazines and TV either from Italy, the UK or Paris.
What are you favourite hair accessories?
Original colours that truly stand out.
What do you hope to see for TONI&GUY Malta in the future?
Having my own TONI&GUY or essensuals salon.
If you could cut anyone’s hair who would it be?
What are your other hobbies besides hairdressing?
Swimming and partying.
What has been the happiest day of your life, to date?
When I was at the waterfall in Brazil, I felt like I was in heaven, that was in 2005.
And the worst?
Losing my parents.
Favourite food and drink?
Drinking wine and eating steak.
Is there anything a friend once told you, and which you still remember and treasure?
Yes, my friend warned me to keep your friends close and hold your enemies closer.
If you had to change your career, what would you do?
A business that can make a very big turnover.
